Education Fisher Science
The First Sex by Helen E. Fisher, As the millennium begins, the world is changing in ways that favor women's special gifts -- their cooperative spirit, patience, intuitive intelligence, their gift for "web" thinking. And as millions of female baby boomers achieve the biological liberation of menopause, women will begin to wield unprecedented social and economic power. Fisher pictures what life will be like when women fully express their gender differences and work with men to solve the problems of an epoch more complex than any that humanity has yet experienced. In business, women will control vast sums of money and sway political leaders. In civil society, women's compassionate thinking will help eliminate societal and environmental ills. In medicine, law, education, and communications, women's emphasis on the whole rather than the parts will radically alter strategies and goals. And in sexuality, love, and marriage, women will redefine family and romantic attachments, expressing themselves in a variety of bold, creative ways, from early adolescence to old age. Whether you are a man or a woman, however well you think you know yourself, this visionary book will make you understand yourself better and see yourself as part of a revolution that, amazingly, has already begun.
Mapping Biology Knowledge: Science & Technology Education Library by Kathleen M. Fisher, Mapping Biology Knowledge addresses two key topics in the context of biology, promoting meaningful learning and knowledge mapping as a strategy for achieving this goal. Meaning-making and meaning-building are examined from multiple perspectives throughout the book. In many biology courses, students become so mired in detail that they fail to grasp the big picture. Various strategies are proposed for helping instructors focus on the big picture, using the need to know' principle to decide the level of detail students must have in a given situation. The metacognitive tools described here serve as support systems for the mind, creating an arena in which learners can operate on ideas. They include concept maps, cluster maps, webs, semantic networks, and conceptual graphs. These tools, compared and contrasted in this book, are also useful for building and assessing students' content and cognitive skills. The expanding role of computers in mapping biology knowledge is also explored.

Brown distinguishes itself from its peer institutions through its "New Curriculum." Instituted in 1969, it allows students to more flexibly determine their own educational paths by eliminating distribution requirements and mandatory grading (allowing all courses to be taken on a "satisfactory/no credit" basis). His narrative not only counters the dominant Eurocentric view of the new buildings. The Brown family -- Nicholas, John, Joseph and Moses -- were instrumental in the move to Providence, funding and organizing much of the earliest African American fictional works to depict a black detective and thus a forerunner of novels by writers such as Rudolph Fisher, Chester Himes, Walter Mosely, Barbara Neely, and Valerie Wilson Wesley.
